Side Effects and Complications
Although IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) skin rejuvenation is a relatively safe cosmetic procedure, some side effects and complications may occur:
1. Skin redness and swelling: Mild redness and swelling may occur on the skin after treatment. This is a normal reaction that typically subsides on its own within a few hours to a few days.
2. Skin dryness: After treatment, moisture loss from the skin may increase, leading to dryness. This can be alleviated by strengthening skin moisturization.
3. Hyperpigmentation: In a small number of patients, hyperpigmentation may occur after treatment, which is related to individual differences and improper sun protection after the procedure. It usually fades gradually on its own within a few weeks to several months.
4. Blisters: If the treatment energy is too high or the skin is overly sensitive to IPL, blisters may form. Blisters require prompt attention to prevent infection and typically heal within 1–2 weeks.
5. Scar formation: In extremely rare cases, improper treatment or the patient's predisposition to scarring may lead to scar formation. This is very rare, but if it occurs, medical attention should be sought immediately for management.
The main side effects of IPL skin rejuvenation include skin redness and swelling, dryness, hyperpigmentation, and blisters, as detailed below:
1. Skin redness and swelling: Mild redness and swelling may occur on the skin after treatment, which is a normal response to IPL stimulation. This typically resolves on its own within a few hours to a few days. Cold compresses can be used to alleviate redness and swelling.
2. Skin dryness: IPL skin rejuvenation treatment can damage the skin's stratum corneum, increasing moisture loss and causing dryness. After treatment, it is important to enhance skin moisturization by using moisturizing masks, skincare products, etc.
3. Hyperpigmentation: In a small number of patients, hyperpigmentation may occur after treatment, manifesting as darkening of the skin. This is related to individual differences and improper post-procedure sun protection. It usually fades gradually on its own within a few weeks to several months, during which strict sun protection is essential.
4. Blisters: If the treatment energy is too high or the skin is overly sensitive to IPL, blisters may form. Blisters require prompt attention to prevent infection. Under the guidance of a physician, topical medications such as antibiotic ointments may be used for treatment.
